A Special Visit

We were lucky to have a special visit today from a helicopter. Room H had written letters to the Air Force to ask if an Iroquois helicopter could come to MSS. Their letters were so good that the helicopter came. It was very exciting! Each class got to have a look inside the helicopter and then we watched it take off. Thank you Room H for writing such great letters.

Today we had the wonderful art teacher Rei visit us in Room D. She went to visit each of the Junior classes. She talked to us about art and she taught us how to make a print on a piece of polystyrene. We learnt about etching and we did some great art work. It was lots of fun.

We were treated to the play of "The Little Red Hen" on Friday. This group did a fantastic job. When they got their feedback from the audience nearly all of the comments were about the wonderful expression that they used. Well done Ben, Alex, Nadia, Ngawaka and Amanda. We enjoyed your play.

This week we have been busy writing about our exciting holiday adventures. We decided to write a letter to our buddies in Room I to tell them about our holidays. We will give the letters to them on Friday. Everyone was so busy in the holidays! Here are a few of the letters.

In the holidays I went to the movies. I was going to see the Smurfs in 3D but it was all sold out so instead we went to see The Zoo Keeper. It was really funny.
I ate lots of popcorn and Mummys. I drank all the drink. When the movie was not on everyone was noisy.

Making Gloop

On Friday we made gloop. Gloop is really interesting because it looks wet but when you touch it it is hard. We made a little ball of gloop and put it on our hands. It slowly spread out and felt cold. We are writing stories about making gloop. It was lots of fun!

Learning about Quarters with Fairy Bread

We have been learning about fractions so on Thursday we made fairy bread to help us learn about quarters. After we got the bread ready Miss Newman helped us to work out the different ways we could cut it into quarters. There were lots of different ways. We are all big supporters of the All Blacks and are enjoying following the Rugby World Cup. This week we have been writing stories about the All Blacks. Here are some to share with you. Keep watching and we will share some more.

I know some of the All Blacks. They have won lots of games. Only 15 players are allowed on the field at once. At half time my Dad said that the All Blacks get an orange. Sam Whitelock is the youngest and the oldest person is Brad Thorn. Graham Henry is the coach and he is 65 years old. They do the haka to verse the other teams. I hope the All Blacks win the Rugby World Cup.

Fireman Visit

Today Fireman Kerri visited each of the Junior classes so we could share our Firewise learning with him and ask him some questions.
He reminded us to give matches and lighters to adults, to get down, get low and get out fast and go to our safe meeting place. He said that the safe meeting place needs to be at the front of the house so the fire engine can see you.
Fireman Kerri also said that you need to have HEAPS of smoke alarms in your house - one in every room except the kitchen and bathroom.
Remember to check your batteries this weekend.
We practised getting out fast and shouting "FIRE FIRE".

We had a great black and white day today with everyone showing their support for the All Blacks. Josh G, Jordan and Samuel made these silver ferns and rugby goal posts out of playdough. Sam did a maths activity where he had to match the balls and goal posts to make 10. We are all looking forward to watching the Rugby World Cup.

As part of our Firewise Inquiry we have been talking about different fire safety rules. We know that matches are tools for adults, not toys.
Miss Groombridge has been testing us out by putting an empty box of matches in different places around the classroom. Everyone has been great at giving them straight to an adult. This week we are going to investigate smoke alarms.

We got a lovely surprise when Jenny from the Feilding Library came to see us this afternoon. She was very impressed that we had finished all of our Winter Warmers and she thought our work was superb.
Jenny gave everyone in Room D their beanie for doing 5 stories and she is coming back next week with more goodies for doing 10 stories.

Our Photo Competition

In Room D we have been improving our camera skills.
Last week everyone took a photo of Q-Bear for our photo competition. Before we started we talked about what would make a good photo. We agreed that it needed to be clear (we had to listen for the focus beep), we needed to see Q-Bears face and it had to have an interesting background.

Get Firewise!

This term our inquiry topic is Fire Safety. Today we went and had a look down in the office area because there was a small fire there last term. Luckily Mr Belk quickly grabbed the fire hose and put it out.

We were able to work out how it started and we could see the hose Mr Belk used.

We are looking forward to learning more things about fire and being Firewise.

Making Bird Feeders

We had a great morning making bird feeders today. Earlier in the week we had planned our designs and written lists of the things we would need. All the designs worked out well and everyone is very proud of their bird feeder.

Miss Groombridge was impressed with how well Room D worked together. Room E, Miss Caske, Mrs Mackie and Mr Wheeler thought the bird feeders were super!

Thank you to all the parents who sent along the materials for the bird feeders. A big thank you to the parents that gave up their time to come and help us.

It was Celebration day today and for this terms celebration we got to watch a show by Ray. He was really funny and had some great puppets. Lots of people liked the Grandad puppet and the naughty little rabbit. Going to the Zoo

They are the only animal that has such a long neck. They live in the zoo and in Africa. They are the biggest animal. Giraffes stretch their neck up high. They are soft animals. They are very long. Leafy Sea Dragons

People use tools and chimps use tools too. They get tools from the jungle and use them to get their lunch or dinner. We have been watching, learning and writing about these amazing creatures. Here are some of our stories.

The chimp loves termites. The chimp used a stick to get the termites out. The chimp had to be careful because of the biting ants. The chimps are neat because they are clever.

Tool Talks

We had some more great tool talks on Friday. We learnt about a pop riveter, sifter, garlic crusher, measuring tape and grinder. Mr Belk came to help us work the pop riveter. We have had some more great tool talks over the past couple of weeks. Every tool we have seen has been different. It has been interesting comparing the different tools. We have talked about their size, how to make them work, battery power or man power and looked at special buttons and speeds they have.

It's great to hear about all the sport that the kids in Room D do every weekend. We have rugby players, soccer players, netballers, gymnasts, tennis players and Alex does kung fu. What a busy bunch!

Winter Woolies!

Little Q and Big Q have got some new winter clothes. Little Q went home with Shannon in the weekend and she gave him a new jersey and warm hat for winter. Big Q went home with Josh and his Grandma knitted a special jersey just for Big Q!

They got a surprise when they saw each other this morning because they both had new winter woolies.

Thank you Josh and Shannon for keeping Big Q and Little Q warm. They love their new jerseys.

Wet Lunchtime Fun

What a wet today it was today. All the kids in Room D were great at finding quiet things to do inside at lunchtime.

Kieran and Alex were very busy building with the blocks. They used all of them! Their building even has a marble track inside it. Great work boys.

We have been having turns at doing tool talks. Each day 2 people bring a tool to school. A New Q-Bear!

Room D got a big surprise on Friday. Poor Big Q-Bear had a very ripped arm so he had been away from the class for a few days. Then a box came to Room D, it had this letter.
Big Q's arm was better and he had also had his fur fluffed up.
Now Big Q is better than ever and enjoying Queen's Birthday weekend with Alyssa and her family. We love our new bear - everyone wants to have hugs with him.

Our Enviro Day

We had a great Enviro Day on Friday. We like having Enviro Days because they are a day when we can do lots of things to help our Earth. We had a busy time gardening, raking up leaves, learning about plastic recycling and using tools to make fruit kebabs and cheese toasties.
Thank you to everyone for bringing along all their bits and pieces and a big thank you to Josh's Mum for helping us make the cheese toasties.

The Three Little Pigs

We were lucky to watch another play on Friday. It was the story of the Three Little Pigs. Everyone in the audience liked the way the group used expression when they were reading and spoke in nice clear voices. Well done on a great play!

A Chainsaw

Some lovely children from Room G came to visit us on Friday to show us a chainsaw. This was the first tool we had looked at that has a motor. We had lots of questions like, How do you start it? What is the trigger for? and Why is the handle like that?

Sam was able to answer a lot of the questions. Thanks Sam.

Room G showed us the safety gear you wear when using a chainsaw. We thought the pants looked funny and we liked the way the earmuffs were attached to the helmet.

Wow, A White Kiwi!

Just one person in our class had heard about this special white kiwi on the news. Sam told us that it hatched out at Mt Bruce. Some other people had been to Mt Bruce. We think it is very cute.
